2018 Resolutions

main image

The question of whether or not one should set New Years resolutions is one I have each year. I think the aversion to setting resolutions, for me at least, is that I have yet to keep one. I have yet to resolute and maintain that commitment for the next 365 days. This is probably true for all of us. We planned to weigh less, to have more money and to be more committed this time last year than we actually are today. So, we decide - I am just not going to set any resolutions, I refuse to set new goals. I think this is the wrong conclusion, I think we should continue to set goals for ourselves, so this year I will again set some resolutions, I have determined to set three. Let me share them with you briefly:

1: I resolve to continue to grow in my personal relationship with Jesus.

This ought to be the goal of every believer, every day. I want to be more like Jesus today than I was yesterday, on a continued journey of sanctification. This growth occurs as we read His word, as we spend time allowing Him to speak to us and as we continue in constant communication with Him. As I commit to these disciplines, I will see my personal relationship with Jesus continue to grow.

2: I resolve to be more committed to fewer things.

So many of us are overcommitted. We are committed to so many activities that we are not worth much to any of them. I am committed to narrowing my focus and committing deeply to those that are the most important to me. This requires that I evaluate the activities that keep me busy. The priority has to be Family, following Family it should be Church. Then all others should fall in line. I want to be effective in what I do, so I will be more committed to fewer things.

3: I resolve to be more generous.

Every year I look back on the gifts that we were able to give to our church, to parachurch organizations that we as a family support and even to individuals that we like to give blessings. Every year I am amazed that we never went without even though we gave 'thousands' to others. As a matter of fact it seems that my life is blessed as I see others ministered to by the gifts that I give. This is a small blessing to being generous. But, I resolve to being more generous, because it is an expectation of God.

Here are my three resolutions for 2018. Do you have any resolutions?

I pray you have an amazing 2018!
